Our Building Project

The parish of the Mother of God, the Joy of All Who Sorrow in Atlanta, Georgia had its beginnings in the 1970’s. There were very few communities of traditional Orthodoxy at that time in the South. The mission was formed during the time that Bishop Gregory of Washington and Florida was instrumental in blessing small missionary communities. The mission was named in honor of St. Michael the Archangel. The members of this community struggled for many years with priests visiting and serving the divine services as God allowed.

In 1996 a small mission sought refuge in the Russian Church Abroad. They were received by Bishop Hilarion who succeeded the reposed Bishop Gregory as bishop of Washington. This mission, the Joy of All Who Sorrow, was merged with St. Michael’s. There were many struggles from the beginning. The priest who was in charge of the mission was released and the community was again served by visiting clergymen from many places. In 1997 Metropolitan Vitaly assigned a new rector, our present parish priest, Fr. Alexis Duncan. This year marks his tenth anniversary as the parish priest at Joy of All Who Sorrow.

The parish began to evolve and was an important center for missionary activity, beginning the annual Southern Missions Conference which was always very successful and enlivened the spiritual life of traditional Orthodoxy in the South.

With the advent of a large number of Russian immigrants into the Atlanta area, the parish has adapted to meet their needs as well as those who come from various nationalities and backgrounds. Many services are now served in Church Slavonic and indeed, the Joy of All Who Sorrow is one of very few communities in the South able to serve the needs of the Russian speaking community.

The parish sponsors great many social and spiritual activities. The parish sponsors the only Russian language program for alcoholics in Georgia. Many cultural and fund raising events are held throughout the year. The parish is growing and each week sees new faces. Some are visitors and some make commitments to the community.

The size of the present church and hall are inadequate. A hopeful building program is underway. Land beside the church has been purchased and the Building Committee is in the process of working with the county government and builders to finalize plans for a new church. The breaking of ground will, with God’s help, take place this year.

The parish is also in the planning stages of establishing a cemetery. This will be the first Russian Orthodox cemetery in the state of Georgia, and perhaps even the southeast. Proceeds from the sale of cemetery plots will go toward the construction of the new church.

Presently, the community is rather small. On a Sunday there is an average of forty believers in attendance. On feast days that number can easily double. There are hopes that a new church and a more visible witness will bring more and more faithful to the parish. The parish celebrates its feast on the 24th of November (Julian Church Calendar – the civil American date is November 6th) Visitors are always warmly received.

Приход Пресвятой Богородицы Всех Скорбящих Радости в Атланте Джоржия образовался в семидесятых годах. В то время было только несколько Православных общин на юге Америки. Миссия была организована во времена, когда Епископ Григорий Вашингтонский и Флоридский способствовал благословлению образования небольших миссионерских общин. Миссия была названа в честь Святого Михаила Архангела. Долгие годы Миссия не имела настоятеля и Литургии служилсь приходящим священником, как Бог подаст.

В 1996 году малочисленные миссии находили прибежище в Русской Заграничной Церкви. Они были приняты Епископом Иларионом, приемником Епископа Григория. Миссиия Всех Скорбящих Радости была объеденена с миссией Святого Михаила. Священник, который руководил миссией был отозван, и службы опять служились приходящими священниками до тех пор, пока в 1997 году Митрополит Виталий не назначил настоятелем Отца Алексия Дункана. В зтом году будет 10 лет, как Отец Алексий служит в церкви Всех Скорбящих Радости.

Приход начал развиваться и стал важным центром миссионерской деятельности, начиная с ежегодных Конференций Южных Миссий, которые всегда проходили очень успешно и вносили вдохновение в духовную жизнь Православия на Юге.

С притоком большого колличества Русской Эмиграции в Атланту приход адаптировал необходимые изменения для того, что бы лучше принять нужды прихожан разной национальности и происхождения. Много служб проходит сейчас на Церковно-Славянском языке и с уверенностью можно сказать, что Всех Скорбящих Радости- один из немногих приходов на Юге, который в состоянии встретить нужды русскоязычного населения.

Приход организовывает много духовных и культурных мероприятий. Единственная Русскоязычная Анонимная Прогорамма для Алкоголиков обосновалась под крышей Всех Скорбящих Радости. Приход развивается и появляются новые лица. Кто-то приходит от случая к случаю, но многие становятся регулярными прихожанами.

Размеры нынешней Церкви уже недостаточны и проект строительства нового здания в процессе разработки. Куплен соседний участок земли и Комитет по Строительству заеимается урегулеровкой проекта с местными властями. Есть надежда, что строительство начнется уже в этом году.

Вместе со строительством церкви Приход планирует образование первого Русского Православного кладбища в штате Джлржия, а может и во всем Южно-Восточном регионе. Доход от продажи участков пойдет в Фонд Строительства Новой Церкви.

В настоящее время наша община довольно- таки малочисленная. По Воскресениям приходит примерно около сорока верующих. По праздникам бывает в два раза больше. Есть надежда, что новая церковь и очевидное свидетельство Божие приведет больше верующих в наш приход. Приходской праздник приходится на 24 Ноября по церковному календарю- 6 Нояря по гражданскому. Мы всегда тепло встречаем всех желающих посетить нашу церковь.
